Class 120(3) In a process for imparting a twisting tendency sectionally and alternately in opposite twisting directions to mono- or multifilament yarn of synthetic organic material, e.g. a polyamide, polyester or polyacrylonitrile, the yarn is temporarily highly twisted in one direction and subjected in such twisted condition to a moist or dry heat treatment to set the twist and then temporarily highly twisted in the opposite direction by means of a false-twisting apparatus and intermittentlye.g. at 1-20 second intervals, subjected to heatsetting (as by interrupted contact with a heated body or by a high frequency field) in this second twisted condition. Twisting (including backtwisting) stages may be effected separately or continuously and/or successively and by falsetwisting. Adjacent sections of yarn having opposite twisting tendency may be of equal length. As shown, yarn which has been subjected to the first twisting and heating passes from rollers 7 around a guide pulley 12 and its contact with the surface of a convex, electrically-heated, metal body 15 is rendered intermittent by electromagnetically actuated pivoting of a spring- loaded arm 11. Cold air emerging from a slot 17 of a ventilator ensures that no heat is transmitted by convection from body 15 to the yarn.
