Abstract

131,636. Schneider et Cie. Feb. 20, 1918, [Convention date]. Sights.-Consists in a cranked sighting- telescope, especially for use in armoured cars, comprising a straight body-tube carrying the objective and mounted to share the movements of the gun cradle, and a cranked eyepiece tube carrying reflecting devices, mounted to rotate about the axis of the body, whereby the position of the eyepiece can be adjusted to suit varying elevations of the gun. The invention also comprises means for mounting the telescope so that the parallelism between the axis of the telescope body and the axis of the gun barrel can be adjusted. In the construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the telescope comprises a body tube A carrying the objective H and a cranked eyepiece tube G mounted to rotate about the axis of the tube A, and carrying lenses g, g<1>, reflecting-prisms g<2>, g<3>, and an eyepiece F. Mounted behind the objective H is a field lens I, the flat face of which carries a micrometer, Fig. 9. A brake to restrain rotation of the eyepiece tube comprises a spring band J coiled tightly round the part A of the telescope body and abutting at each end against a tongue G<3> on the cranked tube, the middle coil passing freely through a notch in the tongue G<3>. When the tube G is turned the tongue bears against the end of the coiled band and loosens it sufficiently for the tube to be turned without much effort. The telescope body is mounted by a spherical front bearing K, and by an adjustable rear bearing comprising a ring L suspended from a screw stem M, which is vertically adjusted by a nut N which is itself movable laterally in a bracket 0. In a modification, the telescope body is mounted in a bracket B, Figs. 1 and 3, movable on the gun cradle about a vertical axis and provided at the rear with fixing screws B<4>.
