1316116 Spinning yarns; textile drafting rollers COURTAULDS Ltd 1 Oct 1970 [2 Oct 1969] 48428/69 Headings DID and D1F A yarn of varying colour characteristic is produced by drafting and twisting together yarn components, e.g. slivers, rovings or tops, of which at least one is of different colour character, i.e. of different colour or different dyeing affinity, from the remainder. This one component is fed to the drafting stage at different rates, the rate of feed of the remainder being changed in timed relationship with change in the rate of feed of the one component so that the yarn when formed will be uniform in cross-section. Each component is drafted between back rollers exclusive to itself and front rollers common to all the components and then passes to twisting spindles. The paths between each of the back rollers and the front roller and the speeds and forms of rollers are such as to subject the components to identical drafting conditions. In the operation of the apparatus shown, pairs of components 50, 51 (of different colour character) and 52, 53 (also of different colour character) pass through channel guides 54, 55, and 56, 57 and through conical guides 58, 59, and 60, 61, to the nips of back rollers 6 and 10, 7 and 11, 8 and 12, 9 and 13, thence through condensers 62, 63, to front rollers 23, 24, and 25, 26, and subsequently to spindles whereby they are formed into yarns. Clutches 35 and 37 are energised alternately under the control of time-switch operated switches, Fig. 3 (not shown) to transmit a drive from main shaft 38 alternately to shaft 5 carrying rollers 6 and 9 and to shaft 20 thence to sleeve 16 carrying rollers 7 and 8. The rates at which the controlling switches open and close are adjusted so that the phasing-out of the feed of one component of each pair and the phasing-in of the feed of the other component at each changeover of the drives yield a final yarn of uniform cross-section.
