Abstract

1315385 Photographic silver dye-bleach process CIBA GEIGY A G 17 July 1970 [25 July 1969] 34765/70 Heading G2C A photographic silver dye-bleach process, comprises exposing imagewize a photographic material comprising a support, at least one silver halide emulsion layer containing a diffusion resistant bleachable image dyestuff and adjacent to this layer on the side remote from the support silver halide emulsion layer free of image dyestuff, the sensitivity of which latter layer is at least as high as that of the layer containing dyestuff, and processing in the presence of a dyebleaching catalyst to give a colour image, the colour image being produced exclusively through image dyestuffs present in the material prior to the exposure. The sensitivities of the layers are measured in the absorbing regions of the dyestuff in the dyestuff containing layer. The sensitivities of the silver halide emulsion layers may be chosen so as to improve the linearity of the correspondihg colour gradation curve. The layer containing the image dyestuff and (or the adjacent layer which is free of image dyestuff may be optically sensitized. These layers may be optically sensitized with the same sensitizer. The layer which is free of image dyestuff may contain 10- 100% the amount of silver halide in the layer containing the image dyestuff. The dye-bleaching catalyst may be pyrazine, quinoxaline or phenazine and may be in a layer of the material, the dye-bleach bath or a pre-dye-bleach bath. The material may comprise at least two separate pairs of layers each comprising a layer containing the image dyestuff and an adjacent layer free of the image dyestuff on the side of the former layer remote from the support. The pairs of layers may be separated by an intermediate layer which may contain one or more filter dyestuffs, UV absorbers and/or oxidizing agents. Since the colourless silver halide emulsion layer lies on the side of the dyestuff containing layer remote from the support (i.e. on exposure, the side facing the light source), the colourless layer does not suffer optical desensitization by the image dyestuff layer.
