Abstract

1315194 Control of AC motors COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSON HOUSTON HOTCHKISS BRANDT 7 July 1970 [9 July 1969] 33026/70 Heading H2J A clothes washing machine includes two mechanically coupled motors 1, 2, motor 1 being a slow speed motor for the washing operation and motor 2 a high speed motor for clothes drying, the motors being connected to a supply 21 through a safety switch 12 which is moved from the normal position 13 to a safety position 14 to stop the machine when its loading door is opened. A switch 11 is moved between positions 15, 16 to energize the motor 1 through reversing switch 7 or to energize the motor 2, the motor 2 having a starting capacitor 20 which is disconnected by a centrifugal switch 10. A further centrifugal switch 19 driven by the motor 2 has contacts which are closed when the machine is rotating at a speed higher than that of the washing speed. Thus, if the door is opened during a high speed drying operation as shown in the Fig. the motor 2 is disconnected by the switch 12 and the motor 1 is connected to the supply 21 through switch 19 whereby the machine is slowed down to the speed of motor 1. When this speed is reached switch 19 opens and the motor 1 is disconnected so that the machine stops. In a modification (Fig. 6, not shown) the switch 19 is connected to the opposite terminal of the motor 1 so that it rotates in reverse direction to the machine to cause a stronger braking action.
