Abstract

1,152,111. Control of motors. AMETEK Inc. 17 April, 1967 [21 April, 1966], No. 17445/67. Heading H2J. [Also in Division D1] A laundry machine has a drum with three compartments each of which has a door adapted to be registered with an access opening in an outer casing for loading or unloading the drum. Closure of switch 40 energizes relay R1 through normally-closed contacts of a reed switch RS1, whereby contacts CR1 close for forward operation of the drum-driving motor. A sleeve is also driven by the motor and mounts magnets 34 which co-operate with reed switches RS1, RS2. When the first magnet 34 moves opposite switch RS1, the latter opens to interrupt the motor circuit. The drum continues to coast forwardly until the first magnet moves opposite switch RS2 which now closes to energize relay R2 whose contact CR2-1 establishes a reversing circuit for the motor. At the same time, the second magnet 34 has moved opposite switch RS1 to keep relay R1 de-energized. If the momentum is such that the magnets 34 move beyond switch RS2, contacts CR2-2, CR2-3, provide a holding circuit for the relay R2 and a break for the forward driving circuit. After forward rotation has been arrested and the drum moves in the reverse direction, both relays R1, R2 are de-energized and the drum coasts to a position in which the forwarddriving circuit is re-closed. The hunting cycle is repeated until the drum finally comes to rest with one of the magnets 34 in front of switch RS1 and no magnet in front of switch RS2, thereby opening all power circuits of the motor. The pair of adjacently located magnets may be replaced by a single, elongated, permanent magnet. An electromagnet may be energized only when a switch 40 is actuated to avoid operation of the reed switches during a normal washing operation. Second and third control switches 40 operate respective hunting circuits for the other compartments of the drum.
