Abstract

1351755 Control of A.C. motors HOOVER Ltd 8 July 1971 [9 July 1970] 33409/70 Heading H2J [Also in Division H1] A washing and wringing machine, such as that described in Specification 778,169, is provided with the motor control circuit shown in which the main winding 11 of the split-phase induction driving motor is connected across the changeover contacts 19, 20 of a reversing switch 16 having wash contacts 17, 21 and wring contacts 18, 22, the last four contacts being interconnected with the motor start winding 10, a normally-closed two-way direction-responsive centrifugal switch 14 and the normally-open contacts 24, 25 of a dead man switch 23 which also includes a change-over switch having a change-over contact 26, a normally-open contact 27 and a normally-closed contact 28. The arrangement is such that with the switch 16 in the wash position the winding 11 will be energized from the supply 33 whether the switch 23 is actuated or not and the winding 10 will be actuated normally in one direction under the control of switch 14, and with the switch 16 in the wring position the winding 11 is energized only when switch 23 is operated to close contacts 26, 27, such operation also allowing energization of the winding 10 through contacts 18, 20; 25; 24; 19, 22. The switch 14 enables the start winding 10 to be connected so as to produce a braking torque while the motor is running at full speed. A three way switch 36 provides for energization of the motor or a heater 37 or for de-energization of both. The dead man switch 23 is mounted near the bottom of the front wall of the machine and is operated by a foot-controlled pedal coupled to a spring- urged toggle, Figs. 2, 3 and 4 (not shown), the arrangement being such that considerable force is required to initially depress the pedal but little force is required to hold it in the operated position. This feature plus the height of the pedal from the ground makes difficult the actuation of the pedal by a child and so protects against undesired operation. The dead man contact 26 is arranged to change over before either of the contacts 24, 25 closes.
