Abstract
1314023 Toughened polyvinyl aromatic compositions BP CHEMICALS Ltd 17 Aug 1970 [9 Sept 1969] 44535/69 Heading C3G A toughened polyvinyl aromatic composition comprising polyvinyl aromatic compound and a rubber mixture of at least 50% by weight of polybutadiene having a cis 1,4 content of more than 90% mol. and not more than 50% by weight of polybutadiene having a cis 1,4 content of 10 to 50% mol. may be prepared by polymerizing a solution of the two rubbers in a vinyl aromatic monomer until phase inversion occurs, forming a stabilized aqueous suspension of the polymerization mix and continuing polymerization. Acrylonitrile may be present in the solution polymerization stage. In examples, a solution in styrene of two polybutadienes and polystyrene is polymerized in the presence of water. After phase inversion polyvinyl alcohol/calcium phosphate suspending agent is added and polymerization is continued.
