Abstract

1,243,051. Toughened polyvinyl aromatic compositions. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 13 Jan., 1969 [18 Jan., 1968], No. 2702/68. Heading C3G. A toughened polyvinyl aromatic composition is produced by a process comprising (1) dissolving a rubber and, optionally, a preformed polyvinyl aromatic compound in a monomeric vinyl aromatic compound, adding water and an amount of suspending agent sufficient to reduce the viscosity of the mixture of rubber solution and water but insufficient to produce a stable suspension, and polymerizing the monomer using a free radical initiator to a conversion which is sufficient to achieve phase inversion on suspension but does not exceed 15%; and (2) adding a further quantity of suspending agent to provide a total quantity of suspending agent sufficient to produce a stable suspension and continuing polymerization under suspension conditions. A wetting agent may also be employed in the process and acrylonitrile may be present. In the example, a solution of polybutadiene and polystyrene in styrene is polymerized in a first stage in an aqueous medium containing hydroxyethyl cellulose, benzoyl peroxide and lauroyl peroxide, to which are added dicumyl peroxide, di-t-butyl peroxide, t-dodecyl mercaptan and white oil during said stage. At the end of the first stage, additional water and hydroxyethyl cellulose are added together with Na 2 HPO 4 and polymerization is completed.
