Abstract

1,172,421. Suspension polymerization of aromatic monomers. MONSANTO CO. 2 Jan., 1967 [3 Jan., 1966], No. 50/67. Headings C3G and C3P. A polymerizable formulation containing a vinyl or vinylidene aromatic monomer is suspended in an aqueous medium in the presence of, as the sole suspending agent, 0.02 to 1.0% by weight, based on the aqueous medium, of a partially esterified polyvinyl alcohol containing more than 20 mol. per cent but not more than 35 mol. per cent ester groups and having a viscosity of 5 to 50 centipoises in a 4% by weight aqueous solution at 20‹ C., and in the presence of a water-soluble metal chloride, sulphate, phosphate or nitrate, and the said formulation is polymerized. In one embodiment, a rubber is present in the polymerizable formulation and a portion of the aromatic monomer is grafted thereon during the polymerization. The formulation may be partially polymerized in bulk to form a syrup which is then suspended in the aqueous medium for completion of polymerization. In Examples 1 and 2, syrups obtained by polymerizing styrene in the presence of polybutadiene are suspended in an aqueous medium containing partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate, CaCl 2 and a sodium salt of a naphthalene sulphonic acid condensate and polymerization is completed to yield beads. Similarly, in Example 3 a syrup obtained from styrene, acrylonitrile and polybutadiene is polymerized in a medium containing Na 2 SO 4 in place of CaCl 2 .
