Abstract

1440268 Expandable styrene polymer compositions CHEMISCHE WERKE HULS AG 9 Nov 1973 [11 Nov 1972] 52069/73 Headings C3C and C3P An expandable styrene polymer composition contains uniformly distributed therein as a discontinuous phase polymeric material which was introduced before the end of the polymerization to form the styrene polymer (which contains at least 50% by wt. of styrene units) and which is water-insoluble but styrene monomer-soluble, the polymeric material comprising 0À01-2À0% by wt. (relative to the styrene polymer) of a butene-1 polymer containing more than 50% by wt. of butene-1 and the butene-1 polymer constituting at least 50% by wt. of the polymeric material. The composition is made by polymerizing styrene, with up to 50% by wt. of one or more copolymerizable olefininc compounds, in aqueous suspension with mechanical agitation, in the presence of a blowing agent and the above polymeric material. In the examples styrene was polymerized in aqueous suspension in the presence of benzoyl peroxide, butyl perbenzoate polyvinyl alcohol, pentane and either atactic or isotactic polybutene-1 or a copolymer of butene-1 and propene, ethylene, hexene or ethylene and propene. The polymerization system may also contain olimeric α-methyl styrene as a regulator and an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer may be present with the butene-1 polymer. The expandable composition may be in the form of beads which are pre-foamed with steam and then foamed in a perforated mould.
