Abstract
1,236,077. Expandable polymers of monoalkenyl aromatic monomers. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 25 June 1968 [14 Sept., 1967 (2)], No. 30321/68. Headings C3C and C3P. An expandable polymer comprises a polymer having a volatile blowing agent incorporated therein and which has been obtained by the polymerization of 55 to 100% by weight of one or more monoalkenyl aromatic monomers having the general formula in which Ar is a monovalent aromatic radical and R is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, and from 0 to 45% by weight of one or more other ethylenically unsaturated monomers, in the presence of (a) from 0À001 to 0À045% by weight, based upon the weight of the monomers, of an organically disubstituted polysiloxane; and (b) at least 1% by weight, based upon the weight of the monomers, of a preformed expandable polymer in particulate form comprising a homopolymer or copolymer having a volatile blowing agent incorporated therein and being derived from the above monomers. In the examples, styrene is polymerized in aq. suspension in the presence of expandable polystyrene beads, dimethyl (or methyl octyl) polysiloxane, benzoyl peroxide, tert. butyl peracetate, polyvinyl alcohol and pentane, and the product is pre-expanded and then moulded with steam.
