Abstract

A foamable composition comprises a homopolymer or copolymer of styrene containing at least 50% by weight of styrene units, an organic foaming agent which has a boiling point at atmospheric pressure below the softening point of said polymer or copolymer and a quantity of NH4Br sufficient to cause a reduction in the cell size of foamed polymer made from the composition and sufficient to impart self-extinguishing fire-proof properties to the composition. The styrene polymer preferably contains at least 70% of styrene the balance being any monomeric compound which will interpolymerize with styrene, especially monomers containing a vinylidene group. Many conventional blowing agents are specified. In Example (1) NH4Br is mixed with polystyrene containing n-pentane, extruded at 300 DEG F. to form a foamed sheet. In Example (7) NH4Br is mixed with CaSiO3 and a styrene-acrylonitrile interpolymer containing n-pentane.
