Abstract

1,237,262. Expandable polymers of monoalkenyl aromatic monomers. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 25 June, 1968 [25 June, 1968], No. 30322/68. Headings C3C and C3P. A general purpose, expandable polymer comprises a polymer having a volatile blowing agent incorporated therein and which has been obtained by the polymerization of 55 to 100% by weight of one or more monoalkenyl aromatic monomers having the general formula in which Ar is a monovalent aromatic radical and R is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, and from 0 to 45% by weight of one or more other ethylenically unsaturated monomers, in the presence of 0À0005 to 0À05% by weight, based upon the weight of the expandable polymeric material, of an organically disubstituted polysiloxane, the polymer being free of any selfextinguishing agent. In the examples styrene is polymerized in aq. suspension in the presence of dimethyl (or methyl octyl) polysiloxane, benzoyl peroxide, tert.-butyl peracetate, polyvinyl alcohol and pentane.
