Abstract

1313388 Wire coating apparatus INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 30 July 1970 [22 Aug 1969] 36886/70 Headings G3R R68 R8W R4 and R30X A plurality of parallel wires 10 are arranged in a flat, coplanar formation and passed through extrusion head 21 of extrusion press 22 where they are coated with a melt of a suitable plastics material. The emerging cable 34 is cooled in a first cooling zone 35, where the coolant is air, and then passed, with the plastics still unset, into second cooling zone 38. In this zone, where the plastics sets, the coolant is water, the temperature of which is controlled by heater 44. The cable then passes through an optional third cooling zone 38, where the coolant is water straight from the mains and then through the width measuring device 49 before being wound up. The width measuring device is linked by lines 56 to the heater 44 so that variations in the width of the cable produce, via a conventional control (not shown) signals which may actuate the heater 44. Consequently the temperature of the cooling zone 38 is governed by the width of the cable. Since it is found that, the higher the temperature of the cooling zone 38 is, the greater is the width of the set cable, a predetermined cable width may be maintained by increasing the temperature of zone 38 when the cable is too narrow and decreasing it when it is too wide. The preferred plastics coating material is polyethylene.
