Abstract
761,241. Coating cables by extrusion. MACKENZIE, M. Aug. 17, 1954 [Aug. 20, 1953], No. 23030/53. Class 87(2). [Also in Groups XXXV and XXXVI] The conductor 10, Fig. 1, of a cable is fed through a die 11 and covered by material 12 forced through the die in a plastic condition by a threaded member 13. The apparatus is heated by a fluid 14, and the cable after being covered is cooled by air blasts from nozzles 15, or by pressing the cable through a tank containing water or other suitable liquid. The position of the die relative to the conductor is adjustable manually by screws, 55, or automatically through motors 73, 74, (Fig. 7), fed by error signals obtained from apparatus for determining the eccentricity of the conductor in its covering in two perpendicular directions, comprising electrodes placed on or around the cable after it emerges from the die, or located in an insulating extension 78, (Fig. 9), of the die.
