Abstract
1525398 Automatic control of resistance EVG ENTWICKLUNGS-U VERWERTUNGS GmbH 7 Nov 1975 [19 Nov 1974] 46180/75 Heading G3R The resistance per unit length and the temperature of an electrical conductor are measured during production. The measured resistance value is corrected for temperature and then compared with a desired value to form an error signal which is used to control the cross-sectional area of the conductor. As shown in Fig. 1, a conductor 17 is made by twisting together wires from three spools 12 in a head 15. The conductor is passed through compactor rolls 13 and an additional roll stand 14 by a draw plate 20, and is then fed to a sensing device 1 which intermittently engages the conductor and moves with it to measure its resistance per unit length. The device 1 also has a radiation thermometer which measures the temperature of the conductor 17. The measured resistance value is corrected for temperature in a circuit 2, and then compared with a desired reference value in a comparator circuit 3. The resulting control signal passes to a programmed unit 4 which selects one or more adjustment control circuits 5, 6, 7, 18 to cause the cross-section of the conductor 17 to be varied in order to produce the desired resistance. The circuits 5, 6 operate to form hydraulic or pneumatic signals in controls 9, 10 which vary the application of spool brakes 16 or the setting of the compactor rolls 13, respectively. Circuit 7 adjusts the gap at the additional roll stand 14, while circuit 18 controls the power or speed of the drive 19 for the draw plate 20.
