Abstract

1312489 Cable handling apparatus AMERICAN CHAIN & CABLE CO Inc 3 Nov 1970 [3 Nov 1969] 52115/70 Heading B8B A cable handling system comprises a pair of hydraulically driven cable drums 20, 21 which wind in or pay out a cable C extending between a load and a stationary storage container 18, the cable passing into the container through an axial guide and being deflected within the container to the radially outer portion thereof to form stored coils. The end of the cable which is passed through a guide conduit 16, is anchored to the container base to extend along the peripheral wall thereof. The cable passes around grooves on the drums and is guided by pins 31, 32, and spring-loaded pressure rollers 35, 36 facilitate frictional grip between cable and drums, and isolate the tension in the cable at one side of the drums from that at the other side. The drum 20 is chain-driven from a variable-speed hydraulic motor 29 and drum 21 is belt-driven from the drum 20, the motor 29 acting as a brake during cable pay out under load. In the embodiments of Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), the load end of the cable extends from the drums to be anchored on the system structure to form a cable loop in which a load pulley block is supported. The whole system is mounted on a trolley movable along an overhead track and the unloaded end of the cable is either fed upwardly (Fig. 7) or downwardly (Fig. 8) into the container.
