1312460 Syphon-actuated flushing cysterns J BARNES and R WATERS [trading as JOHN BARNES ASSOCIATES] 21 March 1972 [22 Dec 1970] 60775/70 Heading E1C In a flushing cystern of the kind having a moving bell to initiate a syphonic discharge, the bell 11 is made buoyant by the provision of buoyancy tanks 14 and its lower, flared end is rectangular as seen in plan and fits within a container 18 formed by upstanding walls 19 in the tank, together with the front and rear walls of the tank. The flow path for flushing is provided in part by the clearance between the lower end of the bell and the container walls, and additionally by apertures 25 in the bell, the area of the flow path being related to the plan area of the bell in a ratio between 1:45 and 1:10, preferably 1:14. The bell is of plastics material and includes an integral operating button 21 guided in an aperture 22 in the lid of the cystern tank. The tank, outlet pipe 12 and container walls 19 are either integral or separate elements secured together. They may be of metal or plastic. Stops 20 on the underside of the bell limit its downward movement. A float-operated inlet valve 23 and an overflow connection (not shown) are secured interchangeably in apertures in the opposed end walls of the tank.
