In a cistern comprising a tank 1, in which is a siphon tube 4 having an inlet leg 3 opening near to the bottom and an outlet leg 4 for connecting to a flush pipe, a motor-driven pump 7 delivers liquid into the opening in the leg 3 to initiate siphonic action for flushing, and is connected to an on-off electric switch 14 for the supply to the motor. The pump and motor may be housed in a liquid-tight compartment in the tank 1, to be submerged therein after recharging, or mounted externally of it, and the pump inlet 8 may draw liquid from the tank 1. The switch 14 may be urged to the open position or may be one opening automatically after a predetermined time of closure. The pump inlet 8 may be closed automatically by a ball 11, (which floats on the liquid above a decided level 17), when the liquid has dropped to a predetermined level 16, the ball 11 being housed in a foraminous cupshaped member 9. Several cisterns each with a pump and motor may be connected to a common electric switch. Further, several cisters may be operated by one pump 7 and motor, with an electric switch 14 to pump liquid into all the siphon tubes.
