Abstract
1279078 Handling sewage from sanitary closets MANSFIELD SANITARY Inc 19 April 1971 [30 March 1970] 24320/71 Heading E1C An arrangement for handling sewage from a sanitary closet, of the kind having a valve 25 in place of a water trap and intended for use in vehicles where a restricted quantity of flushing liquid is available, comprises a vacuum pump 56, e.g. a diaphragm pump driven by an electric motor 61, a manifold 63 incorporating a non-return valve and a vacuum sensor 64, a pipe 58 communicating the vacuum to a holding tank 12, and a further pipe 13 communicating the vacuum thus produced in the holding tank to an outlet orifice 45 in a base structure 16 of the sanitary closet, there being incorporated in the base structure 16 between the valve 25 and the orifice means 45 a drop well 43 merging into a conical throat portion 44 whereby opening of the valve 25, by manual operation of a handle 35, causes the material in the toilet to be rapidly impelled against the orifice means and fragmented before being sucked into the holding tank. The valve 25 is a hemispherical shell member 29 which is journalled on pins 30, 31 and has cut-away portions 42 so that when the handle 35 which is mounted on an extension of pin 30, is operated the valve is swung from the closed position shown through approximately 90, and the material, together with a small amount of flushing liquid, e.g. water, supplied by a pump 21, is then sucked downwardly through the cut-away spaces. The valve 25 seals against a sealing ring 38 supported by a resilient backing 39 fitted between the base structure 16 and the toilet bowl 14. Base portion 16 has a V groove in its upper edge 37 filled with backing material 37a. The vacuum in the holding tank is maintained at a desired value by the vacuum sensor 64 which controls the diaphragm pump. The pipe 58 from the manifold 63 is connected to a fitting (55, Fig. 5, not shown) extending within the holding tank and incorporating a float-actuated valve (74) which, when the holding tank is full, rises on the surface of the liquid in the tank to close communication between the vacuum pump and the tank by engaging a valve seat (76). Also fitted to the top of the tank is a sensor arrangement (70, 71) which operates an electric warning lamp 72 (Fig. 1) when the tank is full. A tube 83 having a removable cap 88 is provided for emptying purposes.
