Abstract

1,063,711. Water closets. SHIRES & CO. (LONDON) Ltd. Dec. 2, 1963 [Sept. 3, 1962], No. 33675/62. Heading E1C. In a water-closet pan 10 (Fig. 1) having an outlet pipe 15 to connect to a drain 12 with a weir 16 to retain a pool of water up to a sufficient level 17 to reach the roof of part of the pipe 15 to form a water seal between the pan 10 and the drain 12, the weir 16 is arranged to be displaceable downward relatively to the bottom of the pool for it to flow by gravity over the weir. The pipe 15, of flexible material, forms the weir 16 and is arranged with its bottom thereat higher than the top of another portion 14 upstream. The pipe 15, shaped as shown, is in a vertical plane, can be depressed centrally by a saddle 19 into a flat form and may be of material having helical wire therein. The saddle 19 is operated by a push rod 20 and lever 21, with a knob 22, and which operates a valve 23 for flushing water. In a modification the outlet pipe is of the same shape normally and at an angle to a horizontal plane, but is displaced sideways and downward to lie with the same shape in a horizontal plane. In another form the outlet pipe has a U-shape in plan view, the base of the U can be raised or lowered without any change in the pipe length, and the pipe is to one side of the pan. In a further form the outlet pipe 32, 35 encircles the pan 30 (Fig. 3) and lies along a circle, helix or a spiral with an approximately vertical axis. The displacement of a weir 33 and the flow of water are controlled by a timing-device arranged first to initiate the flow, simultaneously, or after at most, a short preliminary flow, to displace the weir 33 downward, by energising a solenoid actuator 36, to allow the initial pan contents to flow over it for a short period of e.g. two seconds, and then to continue the flow of water for a further period.
