Abstract

1311102 Electro-deposition of a photoconductive layer RICOH KK 13 May 1970 [10 June 1969] 23053/70 Heading C7B [Also in Division H1] A photo-conductive layer for electrophotography is formed on a conductive support by electro-deposition of a suspension of an insulating resin and zinc oxide in a dispersion medium at a current density of 0À5-2mA/dm<SP>2</SP> and at a temperature of 10‹C. to 25‹C. to produce a layer less than 40 microns thick. 15 to 30g of resin and 400 to 1000cc of ZnO. In the embodiments the dispersion medium may be toluene, trichloroethane, methylene chloride, xylene, heptane, octane, tetrachloroethylene, ethylene dichloride or water, whilst the resin may be acrylic, styrenated-alkyd or copoly vinyl acetatecrotonic acid, other resins also being specified. If a water-soluble resin is used, triethanolamine is added as an emulsifier; for organic solutions, manganese or cobalt napthenate are added as driers. The electro-deposition is performed between the conductive support and another electrode, the other electrode may be the container for the suspension or in the case of a cylindrical support, a cylinder surrounding the support. The support may be Al or paper with polyvinyl alcohol applied thereto. The other electrode may be Al or graphite. If paper is used then it secured to a metal plate prior to electro-deposition. The zinc oxide particles absorb resin and according to the solvent used become positively or negatively charge and migrate to the appropriate electrode.
