Abstract
1355485 Developer XEROX CORP 8 June 1972 [10 June 1971] 26754/72 Heading G2H A developer for electrostatic latent images comprises (a) 0À3 to 5% based on the weight of the developer of resin toner particles having an average particle size of 1 to 30 microns and (b) at least 95% based on the weight of the developer of carrier particles having an average size of 30 to 1000 microns, said carrier particles having electrical conductivity over 10 to 90% of the total carrier surface area, the remaining area being non-conductive. The carrier comprises a mixture of particles having conductive surface area and particles with non-conductive surfaces. The particles having conductive surface area may be partially coated so that each particle has conductive and non-conductive areas. The conductive particles may be of iron, steel, nickel, cobalt, brass, copper, zinc, aluminium or metal oxide. The non-conductive particles may be obtained by coating particles of the above materials with an insulating resin e.g. a terpolymer of styrene, methyl methacrylate and vinyl triethoxysilane. The developer may also comprise a minor proportion of silica hydrogel. The toner particles preferably comprise a styrene-n-butyl acrylate copolymer together with a polyvinyl butyral and carbon black, although other examples are given. Development of an imaged photo-conductive surface with the developer may be by magnetic brush or cascade development. A development electrode is used.
