Abstract

1310787 Change-speed gear; clutch control SOC ANON SUBEM 21 Oct 1971 49041/71 Headings F2D and F2L A two-speed drive and output brake for a sewing-machine comprises a high-speed faced clutch disc 19, secured to an axially movable output shaft 12 and engaged frictionally with the face of a flywheel 11, driven by an electric motor 10, by depression of a start pedal connected by a chain to a bellcrank lever (54, Fig. 2, not shown), engaging a non-rotatable sleeve 46, bearing at 47 on the shaft 12, and loaded out of clutch engagement by a spring 44, the shaft 12 also carrying on a resilient disc 23, a second and low-speed clutch disc, engaged by excitation of a magnet winding 40 with a freely-mounted wheel 32, driven at slow speed by the motor 10 through a side shaft A, toothed wheel B and belt. The low-speed winding 40 is normally energized by a switch in one arm of the bellcrank lever, this switch being opened by initial depression of the start pedal so that the machine starts in high speed. Its speed can be adjusted during operation by varying the load applied to the start pedal to cause more or less slip in the high-speed clutch. The output shaft is braked for stopping in a predetermined position, as described in Specification 1,230,941, by energizing a brake winding 50, holding a disc 51, secured to the output shaft 12 along with a pulley 18, the circuit of the low-speed winding 40, which includes brushes 38, 39, being first opened, following its clsoure by release of the start pedal.
