Abstract
1,140,607. Change-speed gears. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 30 March, 1967 [10 June, 1966], No. 26026/66. Headings F2C and F2D. A two-speed gear for a washing machine comprises an axially fixed internally coned friction clutch member 9 which is driven from an input shaft 2 by way of reduction gearing 3, 4, 5, 8 and is engaged by an externally coned surface 10a of an output clutch member 10 which is urged into engagement with the clutch member 9 by springs 17. High-speed drive is provided by an externally coned friction clutch member 11 helically threaded on the input shaft so as to tend to screw into engagement with an internally coned surface 10b of the output clutch member, but prevented from so doing by a baulk ring 18 having limited rotary movement relative to the clutch member 10 and to an axially fixed output member 15, and normally biased by springs 22 to a position in which internal teeth 30 of the baulk ring overlap teeth 31 on the output member 15 so that axial movement of the baulk ring 18 and thus of the clutch member 11 is prevented. High-speed drive is engaged when an electromagnet is energized, under the control of a programme sequence time switch, to apply a friction brake to the ring 18 which then rotates slightly against the bias of its springs 22 to bring its teeth 30 into register with the slots between the teeth 31 so that the ring 18 and the clutch member 11 can shift axially. The clutch member 11 engages the output clutch surface 10b and shifts the clutch member 10 to disengage the clutch 9, 10. The axial movement of the clutch member 11 on starting is provided by the inertia of the member as rapid acceleration takes place. For a change of ratio during running of the mechanism axial movement of the member 11 is produced by a retarding torque produced by frictional, viscous or aerodynamic drag.
