Abstract

Systems.-Cars are intermittently pro. pelled through a steaming or other chamber, which is divided into compartments by transverse curtains arranged at intervals, by means of differential screws engaging the cars. As shown, the screws 12, Fig. 4, are spaced apart on a shaft 11, and each is of steepest pitch under the corresponding curtain at the receiving end, and engages a roller 16 on a pin carried by a car. Each car is thus pushed rapidly away from the car behind it, across the space normally occupied by a curtain 3, until it comes into contact with the car in front, which by a similar action has been separated from the next car in the series and taken into the next compartment. Several trains of cars may be arranged side by side, their screw shafts 11 being driven from a transverse shaft 17, Fig. 7, through a clutch 21, a tubular worm shaft 24, and toothed wheels 26, 29 and a pinion. The driving shaft 17 is provided with fast and loose pulleys 18, 19 and a belt shifter 20 carried by a slide 37 having a roller 36 adapted to enter a notch in a disk 34 secured to a wheel 31 engaging a worm on the shaft 17. By the operation of a lever 39, the roller may be pulled out of its notch, the belt being correspondingly shifted, and will then rest against the edge of the disk until in its rotation the notch comes back to the same position, when the slide and roller are drawn back by a spring, and the cars cease to be driven. The roller pin 15 is mounted on a pivoted rocker on the underside of the car, the pivot being arranged so that the rocker can swing laterally to clear the bearings for the screw shaft, which may for this purpose be surrounded by switch rails 45, Fig. 7, and 47, Fig. 4. Alternatively, the roller 16a, Fig. 11, may be carried by a plunger 41<a> moving in a cylinder.
