Application filed Augggustjii,1 925. Serial No. 47,841.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, EwALD KoERNEn, a citizen of the German Republic, residing at -Dresden, Germany, have lnvented certain new and useful Improvements lnDrying Apparatus for Tobacco and the like (for which I have filed application in Germany April 16, 1924), of whichthe following is a specification.
This invention relates to an apparatusfor drying tobacco and the like and of the kind in which the materials are fed into a revolving drum enclosed 1n 'a acket ,con-
taining a heating element, and the invenrangements with one or more fixed fireboxe's,
the advantage that the drum will be uniformly heated throughout its length by means of a single fire box which can easi-.
' from the jacket through'pipes 15.
1y be. attendedto. V I
Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings represents a side view of the apparatus, partly in section, 1
Fig. 2, an end view, and I I Fig. 3, a cross-section of the same.
The drying drum 3 is enclosed in a jacket on the end members 2 .of the jacket so that it can be'kept in rotary motion. A belt drive 16 operates, by means of a pinion 9, a toothed ring 8 on the drum so as to rotate the latter. The materials, for instance tobacco or the like, are fed into, one end of the drum from a hopper 4:, anddischarged at the other end through ahood 5 which embraces the end of the drum and leads off the vapours through a discharge pipe 7. I I 1 A fire box 11,.fitted with an ashreceptacle 22, is arranged in the box 1 under the drum 3. This firebox is fitted with rollers 6 whereby it is supported on track rails vwith a and for moving the fire box.
10 so that it can travel froni one end of t the drumv 3 to the other. One. or more endless chains 13, whichare guided over sprocket wheels '12 at opposite ends of the apparatus, are connected to the firebox so that they can' be used for moving the latter along the track. For this zpurpose oneset of sprocket wheels is mounted on a shaft fitted a worm 18. A belt gearing 19 of known type, comprising one-open and one crossed belt, one loose and two fast pulleys, is used for driving the worm 18, and a belt shifter 21, is provided wherebyeither belt may be put into operationfor driving the worm The belt shifter isicontrolled by a double-armed le- 'ver which is operated, for reversing the movement of'the' fire box at the end of each stroke,- by'stops 20 connected to dif ferent stretches of one of the chains 13.
The jacket 1 is fitted with a ,fire door 14. through which, when the fire box coincides'with the same, the fire can be stoked. The products of combustion are discharged I claim: I I 51. An apparatus for drying tobacco and the. like, comprising a rotatable drum, a
I stationary jacket enclosing said drum, a
fire box arranged in the jacket under the drum so that it can be moved longitudinally of the latter, and means, for keeping said fire box-automatically in motion from Y one end ofthe drum to the other. -,2. A conveying device for use in an ap-' paratus according to claim 1, comprising an endless travelling chain to which the fire box is connected, a worm gear for driving the chain, a reversing belt 1 gear for op-' erating said worm gear, a belt shifter for said beltgear, a lever controlling said belt shifter, and stops connected to the chain so asv to operate said lever for reversing the movement at each end position of the fire I box.
