Abstract

1308620 Jointing W R GRACE & CO 26 Nov1970 [26 Nov 1969] 57951/69 Heading B3V [Also in Division C3] An article has a metal surface in which a hole, crack or gap is filled with a composition comprising (a) a polyamide solid at 25‹ C. and (b) 65D to 200D% by weight of (a) of a particulate metal. D is the ratio (density of the metal) : (density of iron). The polyamide may be derived from a C 4-10 dicarboxylic acid and a C 4-6 diamine or a C 6-12 aminoacid; the metal may be iron, aluminium, steel, copper or an alloy of copper with Ni, Be, Zn or Sn. The area around the hole, crack or gap may first be primed, e.g. with a polyamide, phenoxy, phenolic or polyvinyl acetal resin various commerical products being specified. A preferred procedure is to dry the metal substrate, e.g. a vehicle body, by heating with a blow torch, brushing or spraying on a primer solution while the surface is still hot enough to evaporate the solution, melting the primer coat with a blow torch to render it uniform and then applying a melt or solution of the polyamide/ metal composition. In examples compositions of 50 parts (weight) nylon 12 and 50 parts iron powder (100 to 325 Tyler) or 20 parts aluminium powder (40 to 60 micron) are applied over a polyvinyl butyral/phenolic resin primer.
