Abstract

1307236 Refrigerating PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN NV 6 March 1970 [10 March 1969] 10918/70 Heading F4H A cryostat for keeping an object, e.g. aphotographic recording apparatus 1, at a constant low temperature comprises an outer container 9, which may be evacuated, having a closed, annular container 8 therein for liquid refrigerant e.g. helium, which in turn has an inner container 6 therein which surrounds and is in thermal contact with the object to be cooled. The liquid is passed from diferent levels of the container 9 by ducts 18, 19 to different levels 23, 24 of the inner container 6 by ducts 21, 22 under the control of a common valve 20 and the vapour generated in the container 6 passes therefrom through ducts 33, 34 at different levels 31. 32 to a vapour outlet duct 29 having a vent valve 30 outside the cryostat. The pressure within the liquid container and temperature within the inner container is controlled by a pressure gauge 15 which operatively controls electric resistance heating elements 52, 53 in the liquid container and germanium resistance type temperature sensitive elements 41, 42 on the inner container switches off the heating elements when the temperature exceeds a predetermined maximum. Radiation shields 10, 11 are mounted within the outer container to protect the liquid container, which shields are cooled by spirals 27, 28, 35, 36 supplied with vapour from the duct 29 and ducts 33, 34.
