Abstract

1,217,923. Comminuting at low temperatures, H. BEIKE. 26 Nov., 1968 [27 Dec., 1967], No. 56038/68. Heading B2A. [Also in Division F4] Material is rendered brittle by passing it first through a stream of gas produced by evaporation of liquid cooling agent followed by immersion in a low temperature liquid followed by pulverisation in a mill 18. Granular or lumpy material in a hopper 1 is supplied by a valve 2 to a heat exchanger 3. A sensor 4 stops or starts the valve 2 when an upper limit 5 or lower limit 6 is reached respectively. Liquid nitrogen is supplied via a valve 7 to the charged vessel 3 under control of a sensor 9, and rises through the charge so that the surface temperature is approximately that of the non-cooled charge. When an excess pressure develops a valve 11 opens and the gas escapes into the hopper 1 via a perforated sheet 14. When the desired temperature in vessel 3 is obtained the sensor 9 actuates a worm 17 to supply the mill 18. This may be a conical disc or roller mill. Comminuted material is delivered via a valve 22 to a further fluidized-bed type counter-current heat exchanger 23 having a gas chamber 25, porous plate 26 and container 27. The apparatus is energized by a blower 28. The gas is circulated throughout the apparatus via a pipe 31. Ground material is finally delivered to a storage container 35. In a further embodiment the cooled gas from the device 23 may be used to cool the material in the hopper. A second gas, e.g. dry air may be used in the second heat exchanger, drawn in by the blower and supplied through the heat exchanger 23 to the space 13, in which case the hopper 1 is insulated.
