Abstract

A system of counter flow heat exchange between granular material and a gaseous medium occurring within the walls of a shaft cooler device in which the material layer moveds downward under the influence of its own weight, has the material layer subdivided into at least three separate vertical piles or columnar containers in which the material runs downwards in the genral direction of the outlet. The coolant medium moves in a contra flow direction to the material flow separately in each columnar container independent from the others.
