Abstract
1307197 Shortenable umbrellas with cases BREMSHEY A G 6 Jan 1972 [9 Jan 1971 13 Oct 1971] 677/72 Heading A4P An umberella has a stick with at least two telescopic parts and a case 1 in the form of a sheath with an open mouth M and a closed end 9, therebeing a retaining device 5 in the case arranged to act between the case and one end of the umbrella and to hold the case and said one end together with a releasable grip which is greater than the pull necessary to extend the umbrella. In a first example, Fig.2, the device 5 is slidable in the rigid case and has a ring 11, projecting from which are resilient retaining plates B engaging a top cap 4. When the device 5 reaches the mouth M, projections 12 engage in an annular slot 14 and below a shoulder 16, and on full extension of the umbrella, which may be of the automatically opening type, a harder pull disengages the top cap 4 from the device 5. In a second example, Fig.10, the device 5 is fixed to the closed end 9 of the case and the top cap 4 of the umbrella is split into bars 20 at an upper part surrounding a core piece 21 having a collar 23, the core piece being secured to a coupling rod 28 and an inner, lower, stick part 31 has a plug 32 in its upper end portion, plug 32 being slidable on rod 28. When the stick is extended, the plug 32 engages with a lower end (upper end as seen in Fig.10), of the rod 28 to pull the core piece 21, from the position shown, into engagement with the top of an upper, outer stick port 3", such movement allowing the bars 20 of top cap 4 to resiliently move inwards when a harder pull is applied to disengage the cap 4 from the retaining device 5. It is stated that the umbrella and case may be suitable for military purposes to act as a shield against radio-activity when the canopy is suitably coated, or for camouflage purposes, the case being provided with eyes 17, 18, Fig.2, for a strap or straps 19.
