In use the outer arms 3, 1 press respectively on a rail flange 11 and a reaction surface while the central arm is engaged under a hook 9-10 anchored to the rail foundation. As shown in Fig. 10 the hook 9-10 is anchored by an integral D-section cross arm 6 engaged under projections 14, 15. The projections may comprise parts of a metal sleeper, members cast into concrete, or members secured to a wooden sleeper, or parts protruding from a base plate secured to a wooden sleeper. In modifications the hook is anchored (a) by a cross arm passed through a slot in a metal sleeper or (b) by an integral rail-locating flange and sleeper-embedded tail such as 29, 28, Fig. 18. The fastening may incorporate a rail pad and an L-sectioned insulator 18.
