Abstract

1305675 Pipe couplings; valves MORGAN CONSTRUCTION CO 24 May 1971 [15 June 1970] 16560/71 Headings F2G and F2V [Also in Division B3] A pipe coupling comprises a first coupling member 22 movable into and out of engagement with a second coupling member 58, the coupling members each having at least one passageway 30, 64 for liquid terminating in flat faces 44 which can abut with a seal ring 108 between them, the passageway 30 being closed by a spring-biased valve 34. As shown, the passageway 64 is also closed by a spring-biased valve 70. With the coupling members 22, 58 in abutting relation as shown, admission of liquid through a duct 80c to act on a valve piston head 70a slides the valve 70 leftwards against the bias of its closing spring: its head 70b then engages the head of the valve 34 which, too, is slidden against the bias of its spring to its open position. The coupling member 58 is mounted for horizontal movement by rollers 60 in guideways 56 carried by a vertical plate 54. The first coupling member 22 is carried by a roll housing (12), Fig. 1 (not shown), in a rolling mill, movable towards and away from the plate 54 on rails (20). To engage the coupling, the roll mill housing is moved along its rails to abut the first coupling member 22 with the second coupling member 58, the latter then being slidden rightwards by reason of its rollers and guideways 60, 56 to contact spring buffers 62. A double acting liquid servo 92 is energized to pivot clamp levers 96a, 96b about their pivot pins 102 on the guideways 56 and engage rollers 104 at their ends behind cam surfaces 106 on the first coupling member 22, thus clamping the two coupling members together. More than one passageway 30, 64 may be provided in the coupling members 22, 58. The feeds to the two passageways 30, 64 are by way of pipes 24, 26 and a flexible tube 82. The valve (84), Fig. 2 (not shown), controlling the supply of liquid to the duct 80c and the valve piston head 70a for actuation of the valves 70, 34, may simultaneously control the supply of liquid through ducts 80a, 80b to the two valves. Alternatively the ducts 80a &c. can be supplied from an independent source. In a modification, the valve in the second coupling member (112b), Fig. 4 (not shown), is omitted, and the valve in the first coupling member (112a) is a simple check valve (140), opened by the pressure of liquid admitted through passages (124 &c.) in the second coupling member when the two are abutted.
