Abstract
668,353. Lathe details. HUGHES, Ltd., G. H., and CRAWSHAW, A. L. Dec. 11, 1950 [Dec. 9, 1949], No. 31623/49. Class 83 (iii). A pneumatic mechanism for feeding bar stock in lathes and of the type in which a piston within a cylinder engages one end of the bar to move it towards the lathe headstock, is characterized in that the cylinder coacts with a valve in the pneumatic supply line so that the valve is opened when the cylinder is in the feeding position and is automatically closed when the cylinder is displaced therefrom. The cylinder 6 having a piston 5 engaging the stock 1 through an anti-friction bearing 4 and block 3, has a flexible fluid line 11 and may be swung from the position shown to the opposite end of an arcuate slot 7. The position in the drawing is that for loading bar-stock into the cylinder; when the cylinder is brought to the opposite end of the slot it is in line with the lathe spindle and is thus in position to feed the stock. In the latter position a normally closed valve 17 in the air pressure line is opened by the cylinder pushing against a projection 15a. The latter also forms part of a valve 15 normally open to the atmosphere at 16 but closed when the cylinder operates the projection 15a. Opening of valve 17 also allows air pressure to pass through a channel 14 to a piston 22 which operates a latch 23 adapted' to engage a hole 24 in the cylinder to retain it securely in the operative position. A reduction valve 12 is included in the circuit to the piston 5 and the inlet air is controlled by a hand cock 19.
