Abstract

1305636 Electrolytically hardening a film formed on a chromium containing alloy INTERNATIONAL NICKEL Ltd 14 May 1971 [26 May 1970; 11 Jan 1971] 25215/70 Headings C7B and C7U A corrosion-resistant Cr-containing alloy is treated in an aqueous solution of chromic and sulphuric acids, with or without other constituents, to form a film (e. g. a coloured film) thereon and thereafter is subjected to electrolysis as the cathode in an electrolyte from which Cr can be deposited for a period of time adequate to harden the film but not so long that any Cr becomes visible on the surface as a white deposit. It is statedthat possibly metallic chromium is deposited. The electrolysis electrolyte may be (i) an aqueous solution of chromic and sulphuric acid, (ii) a solution of chromic acid containing additions of silico-fluoride or fluoride ions either singly or in combination with sulphate ions or (iii) a solution of a trivalent Cr salt dissolved in dimethyl formamide solution. The Cr-containing alloy may be austenitic, ferritic or martensitic stainless steel, iron based alloy of Fe-Ni-Cr-Mo-Ti-Al, cobalt based alloy of Co-Cr-Ni-Mo or an alloy of Ni-Cr-Ti. Different colours may be produced on different parts of the Cr-containing alloy by forming an acid-resisting layer on one or more areas, initiating the film-forming treatment, removing the acid-resisting layer, completing the film forming treatment, and then subjecting the whole alloy to the cathodic hardening treatment. Coloured steel sheets treated by the process can be deep drawn or passed through patterned rolls to increase their rigidity. Since the hardened coloured films resist boiling water, coloured stainless steel saucepans can be produced.
