Abstract
667,339. Electrodeposition on aluminium. MOND NICKEL CO., Ltd. March 22, 1950 [April 2, 1949], No. 7205/60. Class 41. [Also in Group XXII] A composite sheet to be used for the deep drawing of cooking and like vessels is made by electrodepositing nickel on a sheet of aluminium or aluminium alloy to a thickness such that the tensile strength of the composite sheet is about twice that of the aluminium foundation sheet. The aluminium is prepared for coating by dipping in a 5 per cent caustic soda solution at 65 C. for 10 seconds, rinsing in water and dipping in concentrated nitric acid at room temperature for 10 seconds. It is then anodically treated for 10-15 minutes in 35-50 per cent phosphoric acid using a current density of 12 amperes per square foot and again rinsed in water. The nickel plating is started with a current density of about 10 amperes per square foot for 30 seconds after which it is increased to reach 60 amperes per square foot after one minute. If the aluminium was from 0.02- 0.04 inch thick, plating would be continued until each nickel layer was 0.003-0.004 inch thick. After rinsing and polishing a layer of chromium 0.0002 inch thick may be deposited.
