Abstract
1305492 Tobacco substitute CELANESE CORP 14 July 1970 [15 July 1969] 34032/70 Heading A2C [Also in Division C3] A cigarette is made from a tobacco substitute for smoking which comprises a porous film of combustible carbohydrate, e.g. a hydroxy C 1-5 alkyl or carboxy C 1-5 alkyl ether of cellulose or starch or a salt thereof, having dispersed in it one or more particulate combustion modifying substances, e.g. artificial or naturally occurring alkali metal or alkaline earth metal carbonates, oxides, silicates, aluminosilicates or aluminates or aluminium hydroxide and any flavouring agents, humectants and colouring agents as are desired. In the examples films were made from an aqueous mixture of carboxymethyl cellulose, dolomite, carbon or magnesium oxide, wetting and crosslinking agents, colouring agent and ammonium carbonate; the film was puffed by heating to decompose the ammonium carbonate and the dried film was shredded and formed into cigarettes.
