Abstract

A tobacco product contains smoking tobacco and at least one alkali metal salt of a weak acid, i.e. those which are basic in aqueous solution, the tobacco salt being disposed so that when the tobacco is ignited and smoked the tobacco smoke contacts the salt. The salt may be a carbonate, bicarbonate, thiosulphate, phosphate, bisulphite, citrate, acetate, or tartrate. Preferably the salt is a carbonate, bicarbonate or bisulphite of sodium, potassium or lithium. The salt is preferably present in an amount of 0.1-5% by weight of the tobacco. The particle size of the salt may be 5-400, and preferably 20-50 mesh. The salt may be contained in the tobacco of a cigarette, the cigarette containing 4-750 mg. and preferably 10-85 mg. of the salt.
