Abstract

1,255,290. Cigarettes. BRITISH-AMERICAN TOBACCO CO. Ltd. 13 Nov., 1970 [19 Jan., 1970], No. 54147/70. Heading A2C. [Also in Division D2] A cigarette has a wrapper that has been modified by treatment with a burn accelerating agent in a preselected area, the amount of the agent being greater closest to the butt end and lesser nearer the tip end of the cigarette, so that the preselected area burns in advance of the advancing cigarette coal to allow air to enter during smoking in an amount that increases as the burning coal more closely approaches the butt end of the cigarette. The agent is preferably sodium chlorate, but other suitable materials are sodium bromate, potassium chlorate, alkali and alkaline earth metal perchlorates, sodium nitrite, potassium nitrite, ammonium perchlorate, and nitric acid. The agent may be applied to the wrapper in the form of parallel rectangular strips interrupted along their lengths in the axial direction of the cigarette, or in the forms of spaced circular or semi-circular rings, an interrupted helical band, printed letters, or a substantially checkerboard pattern. The treated areas either increase in area or number, are more closely spaced, or are more heavily treated, towards the butt end of the cigarette. The agent may be applied in aqueous solution to the wrapper either by means of a felt pad before or after wrapping the cigarette, or by gravure printing before wrapping. A dye may be included in the treatment solution to render the treated areas visible. The areas not treated with the accelerating agent may be treated with a burn retarding agent.
