Abstract

1,168,354. Tobacco smoke filters. IMPERIAL TOBACCO .CO. (OF GREAT BRITAIN & IRELAND) Ltd. 27 May, 1968 [28 Feb., 1967], No. 9345/67. Heading A2C. [Also in Division D2] Tobacco smoke filters, e.g. for cigarettes, are made by passing a continuous web of paper, e.g. of the semi-crepe absorbent type, over a roller wetted with an aqueous solution of sodium or potassium carbonate whereby the paper becomes evenly and thoroughly impregnated with the solution, crimping the impregnated paper and forming it into filter rods. Preferably the impregnated paper is dried to a moisture content of 11 per cent prior to crimping. The aqueous solution may contain up to 30 gms. of solid carbonate per 100 ml of water to provide a filter rod having up to 19 per cent by weight of carbonate, but the preferred ranges are 15-20 gms and 10-14 per cent respectively.
