Abstract

A water soluble salt selected from the carbonates, phosphites, phosphates and silicates of sodium and potassium and which reacts with hydrogen cyanide to immobilise the cyanide ion is incorporated in a fibrous tobacco smoke filter material so as to be exposed to the smoke fumes. The fibrous material may be paper or may comprise synthetic fibres or synthetic filaments, e.g. of cellulose acetate. The salt may be applied by sifting, dusting, shaking, from a water solution or a plasticizer dispersion, or by spraying or rolliing on the fibrous material. Quantitative examples are given.
