Abstract

1305399 Filter bed RUTHERFORD ENG Ltd 5 Feb 1970 5610/70 Heading B1D Water is filtered by upward flow through a bed of expanded polystyrene beads 18 which are less dense than water and are compacted against upper perforate screen 12 as water flows from inlet 15 to outlet 17 (Fig. 1, not shown). Fig. 2 shows the backwashing process wherein filtered water passes downwards through the bed, breaking it up and carrying accumulated solids through pipe 15 which now serves as an outlet. Second perforate screen 19 retains the beads during backwashing but could be omitted if their buoyancy overcomes the downward flow sufficiently. The beads may be spherical and of uniform size in the range 0.2 to 1.2 mm. diameter. Screen 11 may be flat or concave.
