Abstract
LIQUID PROCESSING MEDIA BED
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A vertical vessel contains a bed of granular material through which liquids are passed in processing the liquids. The granular material is divided into strata by buoyancy difference. The liquids to be processed are passed into the bed from both its upper and lower ends and exit at a location between the ends.

Claims (5)
PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:
1. Apparatus arranged and adapted to receive liquid and filter particulate material from it by surface contact with granular material, including;
a container;
a bed of granular material positioned in the lower portion of the container and with a freeboard volume in the upper portion of the container above the bed, the bed comprised of:
(a) a first strata formed with granules of material having a finite range of particle size and specific gravity, (b) a second strata above the first strata and for-med with granules of material having a finite range of particle size smaller than the granules of the first strata and a speci-fic gravity which will re-classify the second strata above the first lower strata following expansion of the bed during back-wash;
(c) and a third strata above the second strata formed with granules of material having a finite range of particle size greater than the granules of the second strata and a specific gravity which will re-classify the third strata above the sec-ond strata after backwash and expansion of the bed into the freeboard volume;
an inlet means mounted to extend through the contai-ner wall and beneath the first strata and connected to a source of liquid to be filtered of particulate material by the bed material;
an outlet means through the container wall at a level of the second strata for filtered liquid flowing from the bed;
an outlet-inlet means mounted to extend through the container wall and connected to the freeboard volume above the third strata for entry of liquid to be filtered by the bed and exit of backwash liquid flowing from the bed;
and valve means mounted to selectively open and close each of the outlet and outlet-inlet means to flow the liquid to be filtered into the bed from above and below and then through the first and third strata and then through the second strata to the common outlet means and alternatively through the inlet and outlet-inlet means to expand the bed into the freeboard volume and backwash the bed to the outlet-inlet means.
a container;
a bed of granular material positioned in the lower portion of the container and with a freeboard volume in the upper portion of the container above the bed, the bed comprised of:
(a) a first strata formed with granules of material having a finite range of particle size and specific gravity, (b) a second strata above the first strata and for-med with granules of material having a finite range of particle size smaller than the granules of the first strata and a speci-fic gravity which will re-classify the second strata above the first lower strata following expansion of the bed during back-wash;
(c) and a third strata above the second strata formed with granules of material having a finite range of particle size greater than the granules of the second strata and a specific gravity which will re-classify the third strata above the sec-ond strata after backwash and expansion of the bed into the freeboard volume;
an inlet means mounted to extend through the contai-ner wall and beneath the first strata and connected to a source of liquid to be filtered of particulate material by the bed material;
an outlet means through the container wall at a level of the second strata for filtered liquid flowing from the bed;
an outlet-inlet means mounted to extend through the container wall and connected to the freeboard volume above the third strata for entry of liquid to be filtered by the bed and exit of backwash liquid flowing from the bed;
and valve means mounted to selectively open and close each of the outlet and outlet-inlet means to flow the liquid to be filtered into the bed from above and below and then through the first and third strata and then through the second strata to the common outlet means and alternatively through the inlet and outlet-inlet means to expand the bed into the freeboard volume and backwash the bed to the outlet-inlet means.
2. The apparatus of Claim 1, wherein the first strata of granular material is garnet with an average particle size of about 25 mesh and a specific gravity of about 4.2.
3. The apparatus of Claim 2, wherein the second stra-ta of granular material is garnet with a particle size of about 60-80 mesh and a specific gravity of about 4.2.
4. The apparatus of Claim 3, wherein the third strata of granular material is coal with an average particle size of about 25 mesh and a specific gravity of about 1.7.
5. The apparatus of Claim 1, wherein the outlet means through the container wall at a level of the second strata for filtered liquid flowing from the bed comprises:
(a) a plurality of holes through the container wall;
(b) a screen structure over the holes with mesh coarse enough to permit ready passage of liquid filtered by the bed and fine enough to retain the granules of the bed in place within the container;
(c) a chamber mounted on the outside of the container and over the holes to collect liquids passed through the screen;
(d) and an outlet conduit connect to the chamber to remove filtered liquids collected in the chamber.
