Abstract

1304042 Photochromic spiro compounds FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 17 March 1970 [18 March 1969] 12800/70 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions C3 and C4] Novel photochromic spiro compounds of the formula in which R<SP>1</SP> is an optionally substituted C 1-5 alkyl group or an aralkyl group, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are C 1-5 alkyl or phenyl groups and R<SP>4</SP> is a C 1-5 alkyl, nitro, formyl. alkoxy, carboxy or esterified carboxy group or halogen, are prepared by refluxing in an alcoholic solvent in the presence of triethylamine an appropriately 1,3-substituted 5,5<SP>1</SP>-methylene-bis - (2 - methylindolenium) salt with an R<SP>4</SP>-substituted salicylaldehyde. Examples relate to the preparation of compounds in which R 2 and R 3 are methyl, R 4 is selected from nitro, formyl, methoxy or bromo and R 1 is methyl, #-hydroxyethyl, #- carboxyethyl or #-ethoxycarbonylethyl. The spiro compounds are used in photochromic materials to obtain transient images (see Divisions C3 and C4).
