1415950 Carbazole pyrylium salts FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 16 Oct 1973 [17 Oct 1972] 48225/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division G2] Novel pyrylium salts having the formula wherein R 1 is a hydrogen atom or a (C 1 -C 5 ) alkyl, (C 1 -C 5 ) haloalkyl, (C 2 -C 6 ) cyanoalkyl, (C 1 -C 5 ) hydroxyalkyl or acyl group; R<SP>2</SP> is a hydrogen or halogen atom or a nitro group; R<SP>3</SP> is a group of the formula and R<SP>4</SP> is a hydrogen atom or a hydroxy group, or R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> together form an optionally substituted benzene or naphthalene ring, wherein the substituents are a (C 1 -C 5 ) alkyl, (C 1 -C 3 ) alkoxy or nitro group or a halogen atom; R<SP>5</SP> is a hydrogen atom or a group of the formula R<SP>6</SP>is a hydrogen or halogen atom, or an amino, methoxy, nitro, (C 1 -C 4 ) alkylamino or (C 1 -C 5 ) alkyl group, R<SP>7</SP> is a hydrogen or bromine atom and X is Cl-, Br-, I-, ClO 4 -, NO 3 -, HSO 4 - or BF 4 -, are prepared by condensing either (a) one mole of an o-hydroxyarylaldehyde of the formula and one mole of acarbazolecarbonyl compound of the formula or (b) one mole of an arylaldehyde of the formula and two moles of the above carbazole carbonyl compound, in the presence of a Lewis acid in an inert solvent. The novel compounds may be used as sensitizers in electrophotographic light-sensitive materials.
