Abstract

1423346 Colour formers WIGGINS TEAPE Ltd 10 April 1973 [21 Feb 1972] 7846/72 Heading C4P [Also in Division D2] The invention comprises colour formers of the general formula where R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>6</SP> are H, optionally substituted hydrocarbon radicals or each may form part of a heterocycle incorporating the N atom, and the rings A, B, D and E may bear further substituents. Each R group is preferably methyl or ethyl and may form a heterocycle with the N atom and (i) the adjacent R group or (ii) the ring carbon atom in the ortho position to the N-atom position Πthe adjacent R group. They are prepared by reacting a compound of the general formula with a diphenylamine compound of the general formula where R<SP>1</SP>-R<SP>6</SP> are as above and R<SP>6</SP> is H or C 1 -C 4 alkyl in presence of a condensing agent, e.g. sulphuric acid. The compounds are used in clean-to-handle copying systems.
