1416778 Pyridine-carboxylic acid lactones HODOGAYA CHEMICAL CO Ltd and FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 7 Nov 1973 [8 Nov 1972] 51765/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division D2] Novel pyridine-carboxylic acid lactones having one of the general formulae wherein R 1 is a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl, alkoxy, amino, monoalkylamino, dialkylamino, nitro, phenyl or phenoxy group; R 2 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, aralkyl or phenyl group; R 3 is an alkyl group or a phenyl group which may be substituted by alkyl, alkoxy or halogen; and R 4 is a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl or phenyl group, provided that R 1 and R 4 do not simultaneously represent hydrogen, are prepared by reacting a quinolinic anhydride of the formula with an indole of the formula under Friedel-Crafts conditions to obtain a mixture of isomers of the formulµ and reacting said mixture with an indole of the above general formula. The compounds of the invention may be used as colour-formers in pressure-sensitive recording material.
