Abstract

1302839 Heating and cooling buildings THERMO-BAUELEMENT AG 5 Dec 1969 [8 Jan 1969 3 Feb 1969(2)] 33678/72 Divided out of 1298674 Heading F4U [Also in Division E1] A building panel comprises an enclosed hollow body filled with a heat insulating gaseous or vaporous medium and control means are provided for varying the thermal conductivity of the medium so that the panel may be used to heat, cool or insulate a building structure. As described a panel 60, Fig. 1, encloses a layer of thermal storage material 62 resiliently supported on foamed material or air filled tubes 63 and parallel flexible ducts 67, 68 are formed between the material 62 and an outside wall 66 of the panel, to which ducts gas under pressure is fed by control means (not shown). In use, the gas pressure is controlled in the ducts to vary the thermal conductivity of the panels. In a further embodiment, a building panel 232, Fig. 2, is sealed and has parallel ribs or fins 231, 236 on the inner faces of the panel walls. A perforated plate 235 is suspended from electromagnetic vibrators 234 between the fins. A heat storage material layer 230 is combined with the panel. In use, maximum heat insulation is achieved by still air within the panels but by varying the amplitude and frequency of vibrations of the plate, the air turbulence is altered and hence thermal conductivity. In a further embodiment a surface 130, Fig. 5, of a hollow building panel forms a heat sink behind which a thermal storage panel 132 of crystalline material is positioned. The panel is filled with the saturated vapour of a low-boiling heat carrier which at operating temperatures is condensed at the cold surface 133 of the panel to be collected in a channel 136 which is shut off from a space 134 above the panel 132 by a bimetallic-controlled valve 137 so that the evaporation-condensation cycle may be controlled and hence thermal conductivity of the panel regulated. The thermal storage panel 132 may withdraw heat from the room of a building during day-time and yield it to atmosphere at night. In summer the panel acts to maintain a room at a cool temperature, and in winter to insulate the room. Condensate is distributed uniformly over the panel 132 by the capillary action of an absorbent paper layer 138 above which a space 134 is filled with a permaeble porous insulating material.
